How to Set Up Your First Custom Aquarium
Starting an aquarium can feel overwhelming when you first look at all the equipment, water conditioners, and fish species available. However, breaking it down step-by-step makes it an incredibly enjoyable and rewarding experience. Whether you want a small aquascape for your desk or a massive living room showpiece, getting the foundation right is the key to success.
1. Location, Location, Location
Before you even buy a tank, decide where it will go. Remember that water is extremely heavy (about 1 kg per liter!). A 200-liter aquarium will easily weigh over 250 kg once you add glass, gravel, and decorations. Ensure you have a sturdy stand and a perfectly level floor. Also, keep the tank away from direct sunlight (which causes algae blooms) and drafty windows or air conditioning vents (which cause temperature swings).
2. Choosing the Right Tank
A common beginner mistake is starting too small. While a small "nano" tank might seem easier, small volumes of water are highly unstable. A tiny mistake in feeding can cause a massive ammonia spike. We highly recommend starting with at least a 60-liter (15-gallon) to 120-liter (30-gallon) tank to give you a margin of error while you learn.
At Nalanda Aquarium, we specialize in building custom aquariums tailored exactly to your space and interior design, so you never have to settle for standard dimensions.
3. The Golden Rule: The Nitrogen Cycle
You cannot simply fill a tank with tap water and throw fish in on the same day. Tap water contains chlorine and chloramine that will burn the gills of your fish. First, you must add a water conditioner.
Second, and most importantly, you must "cycle" the tank. Fish produce waste (ammonia), which is highly toxic. In nature, beneficial bacteria consume this ammonia and turn it into less harmful substances (nitrites, and eventually nitrates). In a new aquarium, these bacteria do not exist yet. You must run your filter for several weeks (often adding a bacteria starter) before the tank is biologically mature enough to handle fish waste.
Conclusion
Setting up your first tank requires a lot of patience, but cutting corners will only lead to heartache. Take your time, test your water, and watch your underwater ecosystem come to life!
